Walls

Beyond School Walls has been in existence since 2016.  Initially focused on building an employment pipeline and developing career interest for manufacturing, the program now includes the healthcare industry as well.  Forty students from Hastings High School and St. Cecilia’s have applied for the 2018-2019 School Year!

What to expect for Mentees

In Our Beyond School Walls Program

If you apply and are accepted into the program, get ready for a

  • Witness first-hand the reality of the jobsite/business environment
  • Build your knowledge base about potential careers
  • Engage in adult conversations about future paths, education and training
  • Test out your own work theories and career interests before investing in career/educational paths
  • Develop real skills pertinent to the work of your mentor
  • And much more

What to expect for Mentors

In Our Beyond School Walls Program

Mentoring has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to impact young people. Be part of a

  • Give them opportunities to shadow you as you work
  • Help build their knowledge base about potential careers
  • Engage with them in adult conversations about future paths, education and training
  • Talk about your own work theories and career interests  and history of education and employment
  • Work together to identify relevant workplace skills they are interested in improving
  • Introduce him/her to your colleagues
  • And much more

What will be expected of Mentees

In Our Beyond School Walls Program
  • Be in regular contact with your mentor and with the MentoringWorks staff
  • Return communication within 24 hours
  • Healthcare Mentees: Meet at least twice a month at a time arranged between the two of you
  • Manufacturing Mentees: Meet at least once a month and also participate in 3-4 tours or events during the year.
  • Make arrangements to transport yourself to the worksite or take part in arranged travel on a given day each month 
  • Be interested and  invested! Your time with your mentor will be very dependent on how participatory you are. As a participant in the program we are counting on you to be curiousinvolved  and engaged
  • Complete a 5 minute survey, once a month to let us know about your progress
  • Take a selfie with your mentor each time you meet and sen it to us
  • Participate in a Presentation of Learning at the end of the year, with your mentor, where you get to showcase the benefits, learning and take-away from your experience together

  • Participate in a Presentation of Learning at the end of the year, with your mentee, where you get to showcase the benefits, learning and take-aways from your experience together

The full application has THREE parts - all of which must be completed in order to be considered for the program. They will not take much time, but you will need to manage their completion.

Beyond School Walls Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

in many cases, you and your mentor will arrange a meeting schedule that works for you both. In general this will take place during regular working hours when you are available. In some cases the meeting might take place during evening or non-traditional hours if you both agree.  For some students matched with a mentor in Manufacturing, we will be arranging specific days of the week to best meet the needs of the school and partners.  On these days we will provide transportation.

In most cases yes. If you need help getting to the work-site, MentoringWorks team members may be able to assist you. We may also match you with a mentor in walking distance to your school. Please contact us.

We ask you meet for a minimum of 90 minutes each month. Longer meeting times can be agreed upon by you and your mentor.
